An’ take perseverance, that’s a absolute requirement if a boy’s gon’ make anything of hisself.”
“Another benefit is timin’. Fishin’ teaches a boy timin’. A mighty good thing to have in any kind of b’iness…”
“An’ here’s another thing to look at. Fishin’ promotes enjoyment…”
The above is an excerpt from Jan Karon’s latest, Home to Holly Springs, a new series she’s begun featuring Father Tim. If you’ve read any of the Mitford books, this latest book is like visiting and old friend. (If you haven’t, then go get yourself started with At Home in Mitford) There’s a little more drama and intrigue in this one, as opposed to the Mitford series, though all are thoroughly enjoyable….the word “delightful” always comes to mind when I think of Karon’s books.
Reading about fishing made me think of the importance of taking time to just sit back and enjoy life….boys AND girls AND men AND women. I come from a family of “fishers” and I’m proud of it. It’s something we could all cultivate a little more…even if we don’t have a place to sit and drop a line, it’s still nice to find a few moments in our day to cast out the busy-ness of day-to-day living and enjoy “just being.”
You will never “find” time for anything.
If you want time you must make it.

Lovely thought invoking painting. Thankyou.
I agree we need to learn to take life more easy. Families today are so busy everyone gets stressed and would really benefit from a spot of fishing.
I often wonder why a person sitting doing nothing on a river bank is viewed with suspicion. But, place a pole in their hand and all is right with the world – they are fishers. I never had much luck with fish – a severe lack of skill – but I love the idea of loafing on a quiet riverbank. (Preferably one that is free of mosquitoes, fire ants and assorted creepy crawlies).
Ha! That's pretty funny - I hadn't thought of it that way before!
