"Rest In Me"

Sleepless nights sometimes offer the most honest moments in my talks with God. I lay there as thoughts and happenings of the day settle in. Such thoughts can weigh heavy and don’t always create the most restful environ.

In the book “Blue Like Jazz,” Donald Miller writes:

“At the end of the day, when I am lying in bed and I know the chances of any of our theology being exactly right are a million to one, I need to know that God has things figured out, that if my math is wrong, we are still going to be okay.”

Our pastor, before reading the scripture on Sunday mornings, always says a prayer which includes “Silence in us any voice but your own.” It struck me what a useful prayer that would be to remember on those nights where my own thoughts chase away hopes of sleep.

Jesus talks about burdens that weigh heavy on us and make us weary. He tells us to give them to him and he will give us rest.

Matthew 11:28-30
28 "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

“All shall be well,
And all shall be well,
And all manner of things shall be well.”

~Julian of Norwich
