Toilet Paper Penguins

“The Holy Spirit does not hesitate to use any method at hand to make a point to us reluctant creatures.”
~Madeleine L’Engle

Arduous days of little ones creating messes faster than I could clean them up and answering phone calls from the pantry just so I could have a moment uninterrupted now feel like a blip on the radar screen of my memory. The intensity of demands on a young mother’s time is constant. Fast forward, and I wonder as I walk through my mostly quiet house how this transition happened in what seems like the blink of an eye.

A niece of mine, who is in a completely different stage of motherhood (her four ranging from newborn through grade school), shared a recent “God moment” with me:

“I was tackling the never ending paper pile on the kitchen counter when I came across a toilet paper tube penguin that one of the kids made at school. My first through was, ‘how many things can they make out of TP tubes?” I almost trashed it when God spoke to my heart: ‘It won’t always be this way. You will not have toilet paper penguins in your home forever.’ So often, I rush towards the next stage of life. My newborn has really brought that home for me. She has taken me back to a place in my life that I thought I had completed. Apparently, God still has some good lessons for me here in babydom.”

“I put the penguin on my nightstand to remind me not to rush the next stage. My husband and I now say to each other ‘Toilet Paper Penguins’ when one of us says, ‘I can’t wait until we don’t have to change diapers…the kids can bathe themselves…we aren’t always picking up around the house.’”

As I read her email, I thought of the toilet paper angel made for me 15+ years ago by my little girl, tucked away in some odd box for safe-keeping. It wasn’t easy tracking it down. As I triumphantly pulled it out of its shoebox, the years washed over me and it felt just as precious as the day she gave it to me. I proudly carried it downstairs to place on my nightstand as a reminder to make the most of given moments, whatever stage in life we happen to be occupying.

Time flies...
…toilet paper penguins…and angels.

“Normal day let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so.” ~Anonymous
